Brush pile artwork in Örebro sparks debate on art and cost

The artwork ”En tillfällig yta mellan ett skogsbryn och marken” has become one of Örebro’s biggest controversies. Nicknamed the brush pile, the piece costs 93 000 kronor and has prompted criticism over spending and what qualifies as art.

Artist Marja-Leena Sillanpää responds to the criticism without engaging in the conflict.

– I am portrayed as having earned a lot of money by placing a junk pile in the city. That is not exactly how artists are rich, she says.

Sverigedemokraterna’s Helena Ståhl has questioned on social media what should be accepted as art and believes the work looks like a brush pile dumped in the wrong place in town.

NA has previously reported on the cost of the work and the artist’s response.
