Cargo truck hits rallygoers in Jinju, killing one and injuring two

A cargo truck collided with rally participants in the southern South Korean city of Jinju on Monday, killing one person and injuring two others, officials said. The 2.5-ton vehicle struck the group near a logistics center at 10:32 a.m. as people tried to stop it from leaving, according to police.

Unionized cargo workers staged a rally near a logistics center in Jinju to demand joint negotiations with BGF Retail Co., the operator of the CU convenience store chain. At 10:32 a.m. on Monday, a 2.5-ton cargo truck struck the participants, killing one and injuring two, police said.

The collision occurred as rallygoers tried to stop the vehicle from leaving the area. Hours later, at 1:33 p.m., a union vehicle rammed a police barricade near the site, injuring a police officer in his 20s with minor injuries.

Police detained the driver and a passenger from the union vehicle and are investigating. Union members and police remained in a standoff at the scene.

The prime minister's office expressed its "deepest condolences" to the bereaved family and pledged a thorough investigation. "We will thoroughly investigate the exact circumstances of the incident and hold those responsible accountable for any violations," it said.
