Cebu archbishop Uy links faith and service on Maundy Thursday

Cebu Archbishop Alberto Uy washed the feet of tragedy survivors during the Maundy Thursday Mass at Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral on April 2, 2026, urging service to the needy.

During his first Holy Week as head of the Archdiocese of Cebu, Archbishop Alberto “Abet” Uy washed the feet of twelve survivors of disasters and caregivers at Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral in Cebu City.

The survivors included family members who endured the September 30 Cebu earthquake, severe floods from Typhoon Tino (Kalmaegi), the Binaliw landfill landslide, road accidents, and fires in Cebu.

"The Eucharist shows us what Jesus gave. He gives His body and blood. The washing of feet shows how Christ gave himself. He gives Himself in humble concrete service," Uy said in a mix of English and Cebuano during the evening Mass.

Uy stressed that true love kneels, serves, and is not afraid to get its hands dirty, especially amid widespread poverty, high costs of goods, and calamities. "Jesus is present not only in the Eucharist, but also in the poor and suffering," he added.
