Cebu board backs study for northern airport

The Cebu Provincial Board has approved a resolution supporting a proposed international airport in northern Cebu and calling for feasibility studies by national agencies.

The 17th Sangguniang Panlalawigan passed the measure on June 22, 2026, during an out-of-town session in Madridejos. Fourth District Board Member Nelson Mondigo sponsored the resolution, which urges the Department of Transportation, Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines, National Economic and Development Authority, Department of Tourism, and Department of Public Works and Highways to assess the project’s technical and economic viability.

Portions of Medellin and nearby areas were identified as having flat terrain suitable for the airport. The resolution highlighted northern Cebu’s role as a gateway to Bantayan Island, Malapascua Island, Leyte, and Masbate, along with its existing ports and tourist sites such as Santa Fe and Bantayan Island beaches.

Governor Pamela Baricuatro has expressed support for the airport as part of broader infrastructure priorities in the Fourth District. These efforts aim to aid recovery in areas affected by last September’s earthquake while boosting tourism, trade, and connectivity across Cebu and Central Visayas.
