Clubs note qualification system for international tournaments in 2026

The ANFP Presidents' Council defined the qualification mechanisms for the 2027 Copa Libertadores and Sudamericana, based on the 2026 season. These changes incorporate new national tournaments, such as the Copa de la Liga, to distribute the spots. Chilean football will start early in 2026 with the Supercopa in the third week of January.

The ANFP Presidents' Council approved the competition bases for the 2026 season, including the organization of the Copa de la Liga and a new version of the Supercopa. The meeting emphasized football continuity throughout the year, benefiting clubs and the spectacle. "We are satisfied with the Presidents' Council's response to the bases of the Primera Liga and Ascenso Liga championships. Football will start earlier in 2026, during the third week of January with the Supercopa and the last with the tournament's start," stated Yamal Rajab, manager of professional leagues. He added: "These bases were worked on in advance, and we can say we will have football all year, giving continuity to the competition."

For the Copa Libertadores, four spots are maintained. The Chile 1 spot, directly to the group stage, goes to the 2026 Primera Liga champion. The Chile 2, also group stage, to the league's second place. The change is in Chile 3, for the preliminary round, awarded to the 2026 Copa de la Liga winner, replacing the Copa Chile champion, which recently awarded Huachipato. The Chile 4, also preliminary, will be decided in a single match between the third place in the 2026 Primera Liga and the 2026 Copa Chile champion.

In the Copa Sudamericana, spots go to the fourth, fifth, and sixth places in the Primera Liga. The fourth spot will be for the loser of the aforementioned match for the Libertadores Chile 4. These adjustments aim to incentivize participation in new national formats, differing from previous Conmebol systems.
