Swedish defenseman Emil Andrae was traded from the Philadelphia Flyers to the Toronto Maple Leafs during the summer and has signed a two-year contract with his new team.
Andrae was on the golf course in Jönköping when he received the news of the trade. He finished his round before taking the call confirming the move.
"It becomes like a little shock when you actually get the news," Andrae told Jönköpings-Posten. He described the move to Toronto as an exciting opportunity after speaking with the club's staff.
Toronto already features several Swedish figures, including William Nylander and Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Mats Sundin serves in an advisory role while Daniel Alfredsson works as an assistant coach.
Andrae played 61 regular-season games for Philadelphia last year, recording 13 points, and appeared in his first Stanley Cup playoffs. He has now left the Flyers organization after 107 NHL games and 103 in the AHL.
