Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly remake demo launches in March

Koei Tecmo and Team Ninja have announced a demo for the Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly remake, set to release on March 5, 2026, across multiple platforms. The full game follows on March 12, 2026, with new gameplay features and a collaboration with Silent Hill f. A new trailer showcases the updated horror adventure.

Koei Tecmo America and developer Team Ninja revealed details about the upcoming remake of the classic Japanese horror game Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly. The demo will launch on March 5, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC via Steam, just one week before the game's full release on March 12, 2026, for the same platforms.

In the story, twin sisters Mio and Mayu enter an abandoned village haunted by vengeful spirits, relying on the Camera Obscura—a device that captures and seals ghosts—as their primary tool for survival. This remake introduces fresh elements, including a new ending with the song "Utsushie" composed by artist Tsuki Amano, additional side stories, and unexplored areas like the Umbral Mound burial site and the candlelit Eikado Temple.

Gameplay enhancements include Broken Spirit Stones, which allow players to uncover character backstories and expand the lore. Spirits become more aggressive, sprouting wings and regenerating health in a state of crimson malice. To counter them, players can equip Prayer Beads to boost the Camera Obscura's focus points and reload speed, or use Reversion Beads to reset upgrades. Special Shots via filters offer tactical options, such as the Paraceptual Filter's "Blinding" to escape or the Radiant Filter's "Purging" for high damage at the cost of willpower.

Players can also photograph scattered Twin Dolls in Minakami Village to purify them, unlocking items in the Point Exchange. A new Photo Mode lets users capture moments with frames, stickers, and effects.

The announcement coincides with Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders and features an overview trailer with music by Tsuki Amano. A collaboration with Silent Hill f, the latest in the series set in Japan, will add free downloadable costumes as DLC in the future.

Pre-order options include the Digital Deluxe Edition with the base game, digital soundtrack, art book, and bonus items like charms and costumes. Early buyers before March 25, 2026, receive bonuses such as the Wraith Charm and peony hair ornaments, while digital pre-orders before March 12 add spirit charms and original-inspired outfits.
