Flea performed a jazz rendition of Frank Ocean's 'Thinkin Bout You' on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on March 23. The cover features on his upcoming solo album Honora, set for release on March 27. He was backed by members of Jeff Parker's ETA IVtet.
Flea, the Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist, appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on March 23, delivering a bass-and-trumpet jazz version of Frank Ocean's 'Thinkin Bout You.' The performance included bassist Anna Butterss, keyboardist Josh Johnson, and Jeff Parker himself, comprising three-fourths of Parker's ETA IVtet. This track is part of Flea's forthcoming solo debut album, Honora, due out on March 27. The album also features singles 'Traffic Light,' co-written with Thom Yorke, and 'A Plea.' In an interview with host Jimmy Fallon, Flea shared that trumpet was his first instrument and recounted meeting jazz legend Dizzy Gillespie as a child. He explained the origin of Honora: “A few years ago I decided ‘I’m just gonna play trumpet every day, no matter what, and after a couple years of doing it I’m gonna make a record, and whatever comes comes.’” Flea has previously praised Frank Ocean's Channel Orange, saying, “When [Channel Orange] came out, it really blew me away. I loved it so much and still do. Just one of those real watershed moment records for me. ‘Thinkin Bout You’ is one of the many great songs on that record, and I thought it would be fun to play on trumpet.” The performance highlights Flea's exploration into trumpet-led jazz.
