Gabriel Boric joins private meetings with Frente Amplio militants

Former President Gabriel Boric has held closed-door meetings with grassroots militants of the Frente Amplio as part of its ideological congress. These gatherings aim to define the party's principles, alliances, and opposition role after the electoral defeat. Other former officials like Giorgio Jackson and Javiera Toro also join random groups.

Former President Gabriel Boric attended two Unidades Congresales (UCON) meetings of the Frente Amplio. The first took place on April 11 in the Pedro Alarcón sector, San Miguel commune, and the second on April 22 in the Chiloé sector. Boric engaged with grassroots militants for two hours, discussing his government's management and the December electoral defeat that installed José Antonio Kast as President.

The FA's ideological congress began on March 21 at the Universidad de Santiago and will end in June with a national plenary. The board, led by Constanza Martínez, formed 250 groups of 15 to 20 militants across communes. Former officials like ex-Minister Giorgio Jackson (via Zoom from Barcelona), Francisco Figueroa in Ñuñoa, and Javiera Toro in Santiago participate in these horizontal spaces.

Discussions review the party's history from student mobilizations and aim to simplify principles like feminist, socialist, and ecologist, cutting unnecessary 'isms'. One militant said: “What matters most for Frente Amplio today is building a country project that makes sense to majorities. Not thinking in four years, but in 20”. A parliamentarian added: “We must move beyond the student struggle to represent popular sectors”.

Next week, the board will receive a first report from the process, led by Javier Ahumada. A final round on alliances between Socialismo Democrático or Partido Comunista remains, influencing the August board election.
