The San Diego Padres staged a dramatic comeback to defeat the Colorado Rockies 10-8 at Coors Field on Thursday, salvaging their sixth straight series win over Colorado. Pinch-hitter Gavin Sheets celebrated his 30th birthday with a three-run homer in the ninth inning that erased an 8-5 deficit. Closer Mason Miller then secured his ninth save in as many chances.
Trailing 8-5 entering the ninth, the Padres loaded the bases with a walk and four straight hits, capped by Sheets' 379-foot blast over the right-field scoreboard for a 10-8 lead. Rockies reliever Victor Vodnik, who had struck out Fernando Tatis Jr. in the eighth, surrendered five runs before recording an out in the top of the ninth. Sheets pinch-hit in the eighth before delivering the game-winner. The Rockies held the lead after taking an early advantage in the first inning, only briefly trailing in the second before reclaiming it until the late rally. Mason Miller pitched a scoreless ninth, inducing a grounder from Tyler Freeman, a single by Troy Johnston, and a game-ending 5-4-3 double play from Ezequiel Tovar. The save extended Miller's scoreless streak to 33 2/3 innings over 31 regular-season games since Aug. 6, 2025, the longest active in the majors and tying him for eighth in MLB history since the 1961 Expansion Era. Padres manager Craig Stammen praised Miller's performance at high-altitude Coors Field. “He was able to do it in Coors Field,” Stammen said. “That's not an easy spot to throw a scoreless inning.” Sheets highlighted the team's belief: “We’re not going to lay over, we're going to fight. We truly believed we were gonna win that game.” Miller remained focused: “Hopefully, I just keep rolling and keep doing what I'm doing.”
