George Lucas will voice a character in the upcoming animated film Minions & Monsters from Illumination and Universal. The Star Wars creator recorded his lines in France for the movie, which is scheduled to open in theaters on July 1.
Illumination founder Chris Meledandri said the casting came about after he met Lucas two years ago and learned of his admiration for the Despicable Me franchise and the Minions.
Meledandri proposed the idea to director Pierre Coffin and producer Bill Ryan. The team quickly secured Lucas's agreement. Lucas has already discussed returning for a role in the next Minions film.
Minions & Monsters is directed by Pierre Coffin and Patrick Delage. The story follows the Minions as they attempt to make a monster movie in 1920s Hollywood. Other voice cast members include Zoey Deutch, Bobby Moynihan, Jeff Bridges, Christoph Waltz, Jesse Eisenberg, Phil LaMarr and Trey Parker.
