Germany and Poland sign defense cooperation pact

The defense ministers of both countries signed a new agreement in Warsaw on Wednesday that replaces a 15-year-old framework pact.

Germany and Poland intend to work more closely on defense and armament policy in the future. Ministers Boris Pistorius and Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz signed the agreement on Wednesday in Warsaw.

Pistorius stated: “Wir wissen um unsere Verantwortung.” Effective deterrence on the eastern flank would not be possible without strong German-Polish cooperation. Security conditions had changed “dramatically” since the old treaty.

The pact emphasizes embedding in NATO and the EU as well as the obligation of mutual assistance. However, it contains no rules beyond those frameworks. The Polish government sought to avoid a veto by President Karol Nawrocki. Closer cooperation is also planned in space and the Baltic Sea.
