Nairobi City County has extended customer service centre hours this weekend to assist residents in paying land rates ahead of the April 1 crackdown. Governor Johnson Sakaja announced a 3% discount for payments made before March 31. The measure aims to boost compliance and revenue for public services.
On Friday, March 27, Nairobi City County Governor Johnson Sakaja announced that county revenue customer service centres will open on Saturday and Sunday from 8am to 1pm. The extension provides residents extra time to pay land rates and access services ahead of the April 1, 2026, enforcement drive.
Sakaja highlighted a 3% discount on all land rate payments made before March 31, 2026. "We have extended our customer service hours this weekend to give Nairobi residents ample time to settle their land rates and access county services conveniently," he said.
The governor noted Nairobi has about 250,000 registered land parcels, with only around 50,000 accounts fully captured in the county system. Fewer than 120,000 parcels are actively paying rates. He stated accumulated arrears have hindered essential services including garbage collection, road maintenance, street lighting, and healthcare.
Starting April 1, the county will implement strict measures against defaulters. "Paying land rates is not just a legal obligation. It is what enables us to deliver better services, improve infrastructure, and keep Nairobi running," Sakaja added.
Similar efforts are underway elsewhere. In Machakos County, Governor Wavinya Ndeti directed businesses and property owners on March 18 to renew permits and settle land rates by March 31, or face penalties like eviction and property auction.
