Auditor General Nancy Gathungu has revealed that hundreds of retired county government workers in eight counties continue to receive salaries unlawfully.
The audit of the financial year ended June 30, 2025, found that the workers had reached the mandatory retirement age of 60 yet remained on payrolls.
The affected counties are Bomet, Garissa, Isiolo, Samburu, Nyeri, Migori, Nyamira and Embu. In Bomet, 27 workers received Sh3 million. In Isiolo, 33 workers and four advisors collected Sh3.7 million in June 2025.
The report noted that counties provided no legal evidence or valid reasons for retaining the staff, raising issues of payroll fraud and corruption.
