Hong Kong IVF clinic ordered to suspend most services after embryo specimen errors

Hong Kong’s regulator for in vitro fertilisation ordered HEAL Fertility to partially halt operations after it mishandled embryo biopsy specimens from two patients.

The Council on Human Reproductive Technology announced the suspension on Tuesday. It acted after a genetic testing laboratory at Prince of Wales Hospital found that embryo biopsy specimens sent by the clinic belonged to the wrong parents.

Tests took place in May. The council learned of the incident on June 17 and formed a task force the next day. Council chairman Professor Raymond Liang Hin-suen said a police report had been filed through the Department of Health.

The clinic apologised to the affected clients on Tuesday night. It stated that it had created an internal task force to review procedures and improve operations.
