House justice committee summons ‘Piattos,’ others for Duterte hearing

The House justice committee has issued subpoenas to several individuals, including “Mary Grace Piattos,” ahead of its April 14 hearing on the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte. It also directed the BIR to produce tax records for Duterte and her husband Manases Carpio.

The justice committee, chaired by Rep. Gerville Luistro, issued subpoenas as it prepares to resume on April 14 its probe into the impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte.
It ordered Bureau of Internal Revenue Commissioner Charlito Martin Mendoza to provide income tax returns for Duterte and her husband Manases Carpio from 2007 to 2025, along with tax compliance records for their businesses including Metro City Chow Foods Corp., Gencorp Industries Inc., Carpio Lawyers, 888 Bistro, and others.

“Mary Grace Piattos,” linked to over P612 million in confidential funds from prior hearings and with no Philippine Statistics Authority record, is among those summoned. State Auditor V Gloria Camora of the Commission on Audit must submit Office of the Vice President liquidation documents, while lawyer Cynthia Viñas-Pantonal, who notarized detained Ramil Lagunoy Madriaga’s affidavit, is also called.

Michael Poa, spokesman for Duterte’s 16-member legal team, had “no comment at the moment.” Lawyer Paolo Panelo stated over dzRH radio that if harm befalls Madriaga, “his handlers” should be blamed, as “his testimonies against VP Sara are fabricated.” Madriaga had accused Duterte of campaign funding from drug lords and offshore gaming operators.

The committee aims to determine if there is sufficient basis to forward the impeachment complaints to the House plenary for possible Senate transmittal.

The House of Representatives is ready to receive and act on any impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte starting February 6, public accounts committee chair Terry Ridon said. The House public accounts panel and Bicol Saro Rep. Terry Ridon have raised concerns over a potential conflict of interest, as two members of Vice President Sara Duterte's legal team in the ongoing impeachment proceedings could serve as witnesses in the handling of confidential funds. Ridon stated that including Michael Poa and Reynold Munsayac on the defense panel raises serious questions due to their direct involvement in issues surrounding the confidential funds of the Office of the Vice President and the Department of Education.
