The Japanese Embassy in Kenya announced the opening of applications for the 2027 MEXT Scholarship on April 21. "We are happy to announce that the 2027 MEXT Scholarship for Kenyan nationals is now open!" the embassy stated.
Applicants must be Kenyan citizens. For undergraduate studies, candidates need a KCSE mean grade of A plain and A plain in at least four subjects, including Mathematics, English, and Kiswahili. Colleges of Technology (KOSEN) require an A minus mean, with A minus or higher in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry, plus B plus in English.
Specialised Training Colleges (Senshu Gakko) need a B plain mean, B+ in Mathematics, and B plain in English. Research students require a second-class upper division bachelor's degree or a completed master's thesis.
The scholarship covers tuition, airfare, and a monthly living allowance, funded by the Japanese government. Forms are available on studyinjapan.go.jp and must be submitted to the Scholarships Desk at Mara Road, Upper Hill, Nairobi, by 4:30 p.m. on May 19, 2026.
"All applications must be submitted to the Embassy of Japan in Kenya no later than 4:30pm on Tuesday, 19th May 2026," the embassy stressed.
