Katara International Ramadan Open Chess Championship kicks off in Doha

The Katara International Ramadan Open Classical Chess Championship began on February 20, 2026, in Doha, organized by the Qatar Chess Association. Eighty-six players from various age groups are competing in a nine-round Swiss system tournament until March 1. The event features FIDE-ranked participants and offers a total prize fund of QAR 25,000.

The championship started at Hall 15 of the Katara Cultural Village, with the first round held under a time control of 45 minutes plus a 30-second increment per move. Deputy General Manager of the Katara Cultural Village Foundation, Saif Saad Al Dosari, made the first move on the opening board, attended by Hamad Al Tamimi, Executive Director of the Qatar Chess Association.

This annual event during Ramadan includes players from the Qatari national teams across age groups and several ranked on the FIDE list, ensuring competitive depth. Prizes are awarded to the top ten finishers, with the winner receiving QAR 5,000. Special awards go to the best Qatari players in various age categories and those from the association's training center.

Hamad Al Tamimi expressed delight at the opening atmosphere and strong participation. "The competition will be fierce throughout the tournament, providing valuable experience for the participating players, especially given the large number of highly ranked players," he said.

Qatar Chess Association President Mohammed Al Mudahka highlighted the tournament's role as a flagship event, noting completed preparations and its importance for international exposure. He thanked the Katara Cultural Village Foundation for support, emphasizing partnerships to bolster national team preparations.

The championship has historically highlighted promising talents and supported national teams, making it a key fixture in Qatar's chess calendar.
