KRA launches new offline USSD service for tax access

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has introduced a new USSD service allowing Kenyans to access essential tax services without an internet connection. This is particularly helpful for those without smartphones or reliable internet. The initiative aims to boost tax compliance by addressing digital barriers.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has launched a new USSD service to strengthen tax compliance across Kenya. Announced on January 7, 2026, it targets citizens facing digital hurdles during tax filing periods.

To access the service, users dial *222# and select option 5, or directly *222*5#. The first option covers PIN registration, previously requiring internet access. The second is Turnover Tax for small businesses, at 1.5 percent of gross monthly sales, effective since March 22, 2024.

Option three handles Monthly Rental Income tax for landlords, at 7.5 percent on gross residential rental earnings. Option four involves the electronic Tax Invoice Management System (eTIMS) for real-time invoice generation and transmission, while option five allows other tax remittances.

Additional features include a tax compliance certificate via option 6, and customs tools like the Customs Declaration Cert Checker. Option nine offers PIN Checker, Import Certificate Checker, PIN Retrieval, Staff Checker, and Tax Station Checker.

KRA stated, "One of the most frequent concerns has been around digital access. We know that not every taxpayer has a smartphone, reliable internet, or even the digital expertise needed to use platforms like iTax or eTIMS." It added, "We hear you, and we are taking action. We are working to simplify our tools, provide offline support, and increase grassroots outreach, because no Kenyan should be left behind due to technology barriers."

The service is expected to reduce the need for in-person visits to KRA offices, thereby improving efficiency ahead of the tax season.
