Lukas Nelson and Ernest to write songs for Apatow's country comedy

Judd Apatow is directing an upcoming country music comedy starring Glen Powell as a struggling artist, with original songs penned by Lukas Nelson and ERNEST. The untitled film, fast-tracked by Universal Pictures, is set for release on February 5, 2027. Apatow and Powell co-wrote the script, aiming to blend humor with authentic country tunes.

The project marks a return to form for Judd Apatow, known for directing hits like The 40-Year-Old Virgin in 2005 and Knocked Up in 2007, as well as producing successes such as Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy in 2004, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby in 2006, and Superbad in 2007. His recent efforts, including the 2022 film The Bubble and the TV series Girls, which concluded in 2017, have not matched those earlier triumphs.

In this new venture, Powell portrays a country music star facing career decline. Filming is rumored to begin early in 2026. Apatow revealed to The Wrap that the soundtrack features original compositions led by acclaimed songwriters Lukas Nelson—son of Willie Nelson and contributor to the 2018 film A Star Is Born—and ERNEST, a Nashville mainstay who has co-written hits for artists like Morgan Wallen and Jelly Roll.

"The songwriting is being led by Lukas Nelson and ERNEST, and we’ve had a lot of fun," Apatow said. The duo previously collaborated on "Why Dallas," from ERNEST's 2024 album Nashville, Tennessee.

The comedy explores the country music world, potentially satirizing the genre while following a comeback narrative. Whether the music itself becomes a source of humor remains to be seen, but the involvement of seasoned songwriters suggests a respectful nod to the industry. Country fans may appreciate the spotlight on their scene in a major studio release.
