Marcos urges solidarity, compassion as Philippines observes Eid’l Fitr

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. called on Filipinos to embrace solidarity and compassion during Eid’l Fitr, the culmination of Ramadan, emphasizing that the holy month's virtues should strengthen families and communities nationwide.

President Marcos praised the Muslim community's quiet generosity, resilience amid hardships, and steadfast duty, stating these virtues preserve peace in neighborhoods and sustain trust in communities. “The virtues nurtured during this sacred month – compassion, humility, patience and charity – must not end with the breaking of the fast. They must travel beyond the self. They must strengthen families, restore hope in communities and remind us that a nation is built not only through laws and institutions, but through people who choose kindness, responsibility and solidarity with one another,” he said in a video message. Marcos described Eid’l Fitr as the “joyful culmination” of a spiritual journey, where sacrifice and faith discipline bring deepest joys, gratitude, fellowship, and peace to individuals and communities. Originally set as a national holiday on March 20 by Proclamation No. 1189 under Republic Act 9177, the observance followed the lunar calendar and Islamic calculations. It proceeded after the Bangsamoro Darul-Ifta’ announced last Thursday that the crescent moon was not sighted. House Speaker Faustino Dy III expressed hope that “this celebration inspire us to build a more inclusive, resilient and united Philippines where every Filipino has hope and opportunity.”
