Marinaccio and Stammen suspended after hitting incident

Major League Baseball suspended Padres reliever Ron Marinaccio for three games and manager Craig Stammen for one game following an intentional hit by pitch during Saturday’s game against the Orioles.

MLB announced the penalties on Monday. Marinaccio was disciplined for striking Orioles infielder Gunnar Henderson with a pitch in the ninth inning at Oriole Park at Camden Yards. Stammen received his suspension for the actions of his pitcher.

Marinaccio has appealed the three-game ban, which had been set to begin Monday against the Cardinals. The discipline remains on hold until the appeal process concludes. Stammen will serve his one-game suspension Monday in St. Louis, with bench coach Randy Knorr acting as manager.

The incident followed an earlier hit-by-pitch to Padres shortstop Xander Bogaerts. Both sides offered differing views on intent, with Henderson stating he believed retaliation occurred while Marinaccio and Stammen maintained the pitch was part of an inside strategy that got away.
