Marlon Wayans: Scary Movie 6 to 'cancel cancel culture'

In a new interview following last week's trailer release, Marlon Wayans described Scary Movie 6 as a mission to revive unfiltered comedy and challenge cancel culture. The film reunites franchise stars after over a decade.

Marlon Wayans, reprising his role as Shorty Meeks in Scary Movie 6, told Entertainment Weekly that the upcoming parody aims to "cancel the cancel culture" by restoring comedy "the way it used to be," where "nobody is safe."

"What we’re trying to do is bring back laughter," Wayans said. "The only way to do it is you have to cancel the cancel culture." He stressed the film's equal-opportunity offense style: "We’re gonna make fun of everybody because we’re equal opportunity offenders."

Wayans credited the approach to his family's humor: "It’s how we grew up... the sense of humor that we all were governed with, that we inherited from our mother." The production promises to be "fearless" yet sensitive enough "to let people laugh at themselves."

This comes after Paramount released the Scary Movie 6 trailer on March 2—the first in the franchise since 2013—which spoofs recent hits like Sinners, Weapons, The Substance, and M3GAN under the slogan "There are no safe spaces." Returning alongside Wayans are Shawn Wayans as Ray Wilkins, Anna Faris as Cindy Campbell, and Regina Hall as Brenda Meeks, among others. The film, written by the Wayans brothers, is set for worldwide release on June 12.
