NFL draft prospect Zachariah Branch arrested on misdemeanor charges

Former Georgia wide receiver Zachariah Branch was arrested early Sunday on misdemeanor charges in Athens, including obstruction of public sidewalks and a law enforcement officer. The 5-foot-9 prospect, released hours later, faces scrutiny ahead of next week's 2026 NFL Draft. The incident followed the Bulldogs' spring game.

Zachariah Branch was booked at 1:26 a.m. Sunday by Athens Clarke County police and released at 3:44 a.m. after posting a $39 bond, according to the arrest log. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero shared details from the police report, noting Branch was arrested on a public sidewalk for not moving when asked by an officer. The charges include obstructing public sidewalks and streets, prowling, and obstruction of a law enforcement officer—all misdemeanors. Branch had no prior off-field issues, officials said. Branch, who transferred from USC to Georgia last offseason, set a single-season receptions record with 81 catches for 811 yards and six touchdowns. At the combine, the 177-pound receiver ran a 4.35-second 40-yard dash and excelled as a return specialist, averaging 13.3 yards on punts and 19.3 on kickoffs with multiple scores. Pittsburgh Steelers officials, including Mike Tomlin and Omar Khan, showed interest at Georgia's Pro Day, eyeing him for slot receiver and return duties after losing players in free agency. Georgia coach Kirby Smart praised Branch at Pro Day, calling him a 'football junkie' who loves extra work. The timing, at the start of draft week, raises questions in NFL front offices as Branch eyes a mid-to-late round selection.
