The National Investigation Agency filed a charge sheet on July 10, 2026, against six Hurriyat Conference leaders in connection with a 1996 mob violence incident in Srinagar.
The National Investigation Agency filed the charge sheet on July 10, 2026, naming Democratic Freedom Party chief Shabir Ahmad Shah, Tehreek-e-Hurriyat leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani, J&K People’s Conference founder Abdul Ganie Lone, J&K Liberation Front leader Javid Ahmad Mir, Islamic Students League chairman Shakeel Ahmad Bakshi, and Mohammad Yaqoob Wakeel.
The six leaders faced charges under the Ranbir Penal Code, 1989, for criminal conspiracy, attempt to murder, rioting and assault on public servants, as well as Section 13 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967. The agency said three of the accused had died during proceedings, so charges against them stand abated.
According to the NIA, the leaders led an unlawful assembly during the July 17, 1996, funeral procession of slain terrorist Hilal Ahmad Beigh at Naaz Crossing in Srinagar. Armed terrorists in the crowd fired at police, injuring several officers, while stone pelting damaged government vehicles. The NIA took over the case in April 2026 following directives from the Union Home Ministry, and investigation continues.
