Nomination committee backs Mohamsson amid leadership crisis

The Liberals' nomination committee proposes Simona Mohamsson for re-election as party leader at Sunday's extraordinary national congress, following internal turmoil over potential Sweden Democrats cooperation. No opposing candidate has been nominated.

The Swedish Liberal Party's nomination committee has proposed incumbent leader Simona Mohamsson for re-election at the extraordinary national congress on Sunday, March 22. This comes after a week of crisis sparked by Mohamsson's openness to government cooperation with the Sweden Democrats, including a joint press conference with SD leader Jimmie Åkesson, which led to resignations and a nomination challenge from Jönköping liberals backing economic policy spokesperson Cecilia Rönn. Committee chairman Lars Persson Skandevall announced the decision in a press release, citing incoming nominations and nationwide conversations with party representatives and members that show support for Mohamsson. Challengers had until Thursday evening to submit nominations, but none materialized. 'The incoming nominations together with conversations we have conducted during the week with Liberal representatives and members across the country show that there is support for Simona Mohamsson as party chairperson,' Skandevall said. Sources report the information consistently without contradictions.
