Nurse suspected in patient's death remains employed at Akademiska hospital

A nurse at Akademiska hospital in Uppsala is suspected of causing another's death following an elderly woman's death in July 2023. Despite indictment, the employee has continued working at the hospital, initially in patient-facing roles and now with other duties. The incident involved a mis-set nutrition infusion that led to cardiac arrest.

The incident occurred on July 14, 2023, at 22:34 at Akademiska hospital. According to the indictment, an elderly woman received her nutrition drip incorrectly set after surgery. Instead of 1,016 milliliters over 12 hours, the fluid was administered in one hour. The infusion pump alarmed for high counterpressure several times, but the nurse restarted it without checking the pressure or setting. This caused the woman to suffer cardiac arrest and die. The nurse is suspected of causing another's death through negligence, and a police investigation began. The employee was temporarily suspended while the Health and Social Care Inspectorate (Ivo) reviewed the case. The hospital investigated the incident and strengthened its routines, which Ivo deemed sufficient to prevent recurrence. Following Ivo's assessment, the hospital determined that patient safety could be ensured, and the nurse returned to patient-facing duties. SVT Nyheter Uppsala has reviewed the personal work schedule confirming this. The nurse admits parts of the sequence of events but denies any crime. Even after the indictment was raised on February 27, 2026, the employee remains in service, now with different tasks. Akademiska hospital has not provided further comments in the reviewed information.
