Obsession leads indie films at weekend box office

Three independent films held strong positions in the top ten this weekend. Obsession, The Invite and Young Washington each added to their cumulative totals amid broader competition.

Obsession from Focus Features earned $3.9 million over three days across 2,100 screens. The Olivia Wilde comedy, also starring Seth Rogen, Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton, reached a $258 million cumulative total in its tenth week.

The Invite from A24 grossed an estimated $2.5 million on 1,500 screens. The film, directed by Curry Barker, has now accumulated $15 million in its fourth week.

Young Washington from Angel Studios took in $3.7 million at 2,200 locations. The John Erwin biopic starring William Franklyn-Miller as George reached $41 million in its third week, with a sequel titled 1776 already in development.

Maddie's Secret from Magnolia Pictures passed the $1 million mark in its fifth week, adding $80,500 from 84 screens.
