In Saarland, only one ATM was blown up this year, according to the state police headquarters in Saarbrücken. There were no further attempts. The decline is attributed to preventive measures.
The state police headquarters in Saarbrücken has announced, upon request, that only one ATM was blown up in Saarland this year. This represents a sharp decline compared to previous years: there were nine completed or attempted explosions in 2024, and twelve in 2023.
The single incident occurred in April in Kirkel, in eastern Saarland. The ATM was located in a building that also housed a supermarket and a bakery. The explosion caused significant damage to the structure, as police reported at the time.
The state police headquarters explained the downward trend: «The declining trend can be explained by the nationwide preventive and repressive measures». Additionally, banks and savings banks have implemented extra technical, structural, and organizational security measures in recent years to prevent such acts and deter potential perpetrators. The police advise these institutions. For operational tactical reasons, further details were not disclosed.
These developments indicate successful efforts to combat ATM bombings, which were previously a national issue.
