Outlander was originally intended to end with the season 7 finale. The renewal for season 8 required the writers to adjust their approach while still working on season 7 scripts.
"We had to keep the series going, so it had to end in a different way," Roberts told Entertainment Weekly. The season 7 finale had introduced questions about the couple's first daughter, Faith, and a possible connection to Fanny Pocock.
Season 8 addressed Jamie's survival after being shot during the Revolutionary War. Claire's efforts revived him, leading to an open-ended conclusion on a mountaintop.
Sam Heughan, who plays Jamie, noted the ambiguity in an interview with TVLine. "I think that they are either alive together on the mountaintop or they are together somewhere else," he said. He also reprised his season 1 look for a ghost scene that tied back to the pilot.
