Petro says he will restore diplomatic relations with Peru

Colombian President Gustavo Petro reacted to preliminary election results in Peru and announced he will fully restore diplomatic relations with the new government.

Petro stated he will ask the new Peruvian president to begin a merger between the Andean Pact and Mercosur. The Colombian leader also criticized Keiko Fujimori for her alleged intervention in Colombian politics. With 93.94 % of polling stations counted, Roberto Sánchez led with 50.01 % of the votes against Fujimori’s 49.99 %, according to the National Office of Electoral Processes. The results are not yet final. An exit poll by Datum showed a technical tie between the two candidates with a margin of just 1.06 percentage points.
