Prime minister abiy ahmed has inaugurated a banana farming project in oromia's east shewa zone. The initiative aims to relocate rural populations and enhance productivity. It is expected to contribute to ethiopia's economic growth and self-sufficiency.

On tikimt 19, 2018, ethiopia's prime minister abiy ahmed (dr.) visited east shewa zone in oromia region and inaugurated a commercial banana production project. The initiative complements developments in banana, maize, and papaya in the area.

The prime minister stated at the event, “As productivity grows, the market will expand; income will increase; reducing imports will improve our balance of payments.” He emphasized that farmers should improve their living standards and homes through agriculture.

Deputy prime minister temsgen tiruneh said, “The changes in the agricultural sector make ethiopia a leader in self-sufficiency soon.” The area, previously semi-arid, now sees commercial banana production expanding. Despite water scarcity, farmers use groundwater to shift from subsistence to commercial farming.

House of peoples' representatives speaker afe gubae tageze chafe stated, “The work to relocate rural populations can achieve ethiopia's dual development in a short time.” The government is focusing on rural ethnic groups to enhance relocation and productivity. Ethiopia is working toward self-sufficiency in banana, rice, and avocado. This effort is underway in other regions as well.
