Poppy skipped her scheduled performance at Upheaval Festival in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on July 17 because of hazardous air quality from Canadian wildfires.
The singer was unable to join her band on stage after the Air Quality Index reached above 350 near the time of the set. Her masked backing band performed the show instrumentally while wearing N95 respirators.
Poppy explained the decision on Instagram Stories, stating she could not breathe in those conditions and praising fans who stayed despite the risks. Festival organizers had said earlier that the event would proceed while monitoring conditions with local officials.
This marks the second time this summer that extreme weather disrupted a Poppy festival appearance. Her set at Welcome to Rockville in Florida was cut short in May due to lightning protocols.
