Preventive alert issued for forest fire risk in Biobío and Maule

Regional offices of Senapred in Biobío and Maule declared a Preventive Early Alert on Friday for the threat of forest fires, due to high temperatures and low humidity. The measure is based on meteorological analyses from Conaf and Chile's Meteorological Directorate. The alert will remain in effect until weather conditions improve.

On Friday, Senapred services in the Biobío and Maule regions activated a Preventive Early Alert due to the imminent risk of forest fires. The decision considered meteorological condition analyses provided by the National Forestry Corporation (Conaf), forecasting temperatures above 30°C, relative humidity between 10% and 12%, and moisture in fine dead fuel of only 5% to 8%. This fuel includes dry vegetal matter such as leaves, small branches, and grass, highly susceptible to rapid ignition.

In Biobío, the alert complements one issued by Chile's Meteorological Directorate for extreme temperatures, creating a scenario conducive to fire occurrence and spread. For Maule, Conaf reports elevated risk variables from extreme high temperatures, extending from Friday to Sunday across the cordillera, coast, valley, and pre-cordillera zones.

The declaration was coordinated with respective presidential delegations and regional Senapred directorates. These preventive measures aim to mitigate dangers in prone areas, where dry conditions heighten ecosystem vulnerability. The alert takes effect today and will be lifted when weather conditions warrant, based on technical evaluation.
