PS Sing'oei dismisses claims of siding with US on Middle East conflict

Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing'oei has dismissed accusations from the Iranian embassy that Kenya is siding with the US and Israel in the escalating Middle East conflict. He stated that Kenya remains non-aligned and prioritizes its national interests. Sing'oei also welcomed yesterday's ceasefire announced by the US and Iran.

President William Ruto's administration has reiterated its neutral stance on the escalating Middle East conflict following criticism from the Iranian government.

The Iranian Embassy in Nairobi accused the Kenyan government of siding with the United States and Israel in the ongoing war. On Tuesday evening, the embassy criticised Kenya for allegedly condemning Terah's aggression on Gulf countries, arguing that Nairobi overlooked key aspects of international law while blaming the US and Israel for initiating aggression.

In a statement on Wednesday, April 8, Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing'oei clarified that Kenya remains committed to the United Nations Charter principles, including respect for sovereignty and peaceful resolution. "We emphasise that Kenya remains non-aligned in the conflict. We prioritise Kenyan interests, including energy security, trade, and citizens in the Gulf," Sing'oei noted.

He added, "We stand in solidarity with all nations which have borne a huge toll as a consequence of this escalating conflict." Sing'oei welcomed yesterday's ceasefire announced by the US and Iran, hoping it paves the way for long-term peace. Iran defended its military actions as lawful self-defence under international law.
