Red Sox call up prospect Jake Bennett for Astros start

The Boston Red Sox have called up prospect Jake Bennett to make his MLB debut Friday night against the Houston Astros. The 25-year-old left-hander replaces injured Garrett Crochet in the series opener at Fenway Park.

Boston announced the promotion of Jake Bennett, their No. 6 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, on Thursday. The club acquired the 6-foot-6 pitcher from the Washington Nationals in December in exchange for 23-year-old Luis Perales. Bennett, selected in the second round of the 2022 MLB Draft out of the University of Oklahoma, impressed at Triple-A Worcester with three runs allowed (two earned) over 21 innings in five starts, striking out 16 and walking just three. He posted a 2.27 ERA across lower minor league levels in 2025, relying heavily on his changeup arsenal. This marks his first time at Triple-A before the call-up. Bennett steps in for 2025 AL Cy Young runner-up Garrett Crochet, who went on the injured list Wednesday—retroactive to Sunday—with left shoulder inflammation. The Red Sox face a challenging matchup against the Astros, who sit at 12-20 but boast MLB's third-highest team OPS at .784, powered by Yordan Alvarez's 12 home runs tied for the league lead. Houston counters with offseason acquisition Mike Burrows. First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET at Fenway Park.
