Russia to collaborate on Ethiopia's nuclear power development

Russia's ambassador to Ethiopia, Evgeny Terkhin, stated that Russia will collaborate to realize Ethiopia's nuclear power development project. The remarks were made in Addis Ababa on Hidar 27, 2018 EC (November 6, 2025 GC). According to the ambassador, Russia possesses superior expertise and trained manpower in the field.

Russia's ambassador to Ethiopia, Evgeny Terkhin, stated in Addis Ababa on Hidar 27, 2018 EC (November 6, 2025 GC) during an interview with Fana Media Corporation that Russia will work to make Ethiopia's nascent nuclear power development a reality through collaboration.

“We will work in cooperation to ensure Ethiopia's started nuclear power development becomes real through partnership,” the ambassador said. He emphasized that the two countries will cooperate on shared issues. Russia, with its superior expertise and trained manpower in the nuclear field, will contribute to the project's success, he added.

Miftah Mohammed, an expert on African political affairs, noted that African countries are followers in technology. He highlighted that Ethiopia's initiative in nuclear technology plays a significant role in transitioning from an agriculture-based to a technology-driven economy. Nuclear development will bring numerous benefits, including enhanced energy capacity, investment, industry, and knowledge transfer.

The ambassador stated that Russia has high capacity in the nuclear sector and that agreements between the two countries can be properly implemented. He acknowledged Ethiopia's major projects, such as the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, as demonstrations of its implementation capabilities.

Dr. Ruqiya Ali, a nuclear physics expert, described nuclear power as a clean energy source with low impact on global climate compared to hydroelectric power. She stressed that the peaceful application of nuclear technology offers high efficiency in agriculture, health, research, and various services.
