Actor Simu Liu has suggested his co-star Melissa Barrera as a candidate to play Wonder Woman in the DC Universe. During an interview, Liu praised Barrera's stunt work in their upcoming series as Wonder Woman-esque and directly addressed DC Studios co-head James Gunn. The endorsement comes amid early development on a new Wonder Woman project.
Simu Liu, known for his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently voiced support for Melissa Barrera to portray Wonder Woman in James Gunn's DC Universe. In an interview with JoBlo, Liu highlighted Barrera's dedication during stunt training for their Peacock spy thriller series, The Copenhagen Test. "She really pushes herself," Liu said. "I don’t know who might be listening to this interview, James Gunn or anybody else out there. But I think she really pushes herself. There were a couple of moments during stunt training where I was like, ‘That’s Wonder Woman-esque.’ I’m just throwing it out there."
Liu and Barrera star in The Copenhagen Test, now streaming on Peacock, where Liu plays intelligence agent Alexander Hale, whose mind is hacked by a mysterious enemy. In a separate discussion with Deadline, Liu described Barrera as "a spectacular action star in the making," noting she performed most of her own stunts and was "looking really sharp as a fighter" during their fight scenes.
DC Studios has a new Wonder Woman movie in development, with screenwriter Ana Nogueira tapped in July 2025 to write the script. Gunn confirmed in June 2025 that the project is being written, alongside a slow-moving HBO series set in Wonder Woman's homeland of Themyscira. In July, Gunn stated his team is not casting the role yet, emphasizing that nothing will be shot until the script is finalized. He has previously mentioned actress Adria Arjona as a potential fit, saying she would be a "great Wonder Woman."
Gal Gadot previously played Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Wonder Woman (2017), Justice League (2017), and Wonder Woman 1984 (2020), with uncredited appearances in Shazam! Fury of the Gods (2023) and The Flash (2023). Liu's pitch adds to the speculation surrounding the iconic role as DC builds its rebooted universe under Gunn's leadership.
