Single White Female remake gets title and writer

The remake of the 1992 thriller Single White Female has been titled Single Female, with Sarah DeLappe set to write the script. Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell will star in the project from 3000 Pictures. Producers include Stacey Sher, Marisa Paiva, and the leads themselves.

The upcoming remake of the 1992 box office hit Single White Female, originally starring Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh, follows a woman who begins to suspect strange and sinister things about her new roommate. Titled Single Female, the project is being developed by 3000 Pictures, with writer Sarah DeLappe attached to pen the screenplay. DeLappe, known for her work on the 2022 A24 horror comedy Bodies Bodies Bodies, which received strong critical and commercial success, is an award-winning playwright whose play The Wolves was a finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and received the American Playwriting Foundation’s inaugural Relentless Award. She is represented by CAA, Entertainment 360, and Schreck Rose.

Jenna Ortega and Taylor Russell are set to star and produce alongside Stacey Sher and Marisa Paiva. Sher has produced high-profile films including Contagion, the Oscar-nominated Django Unchained, and the recent A24 horror thriller Heretic. Paiva is taking on her first major producing role after two decades as a studio executive.

Ortega currently stars as Wednesday Addams in the Netflix series Wednesday, directed by Tim Burton, with Season 3 in production. Her upcoming projects include Taika Waititi’s Klara and the Sun from Sony and J.J. Abrams’ The Great Beyond from Warner Bros., slated for theaters in November. She is represented by CAA and Jackoway Austen.

Russell’s next role is in the Korean thriller Hope, directed by Na Hong-jin. She recently debuted on stage in Jamie Lloyd’s revival of Lucy Prebble’s The Effect in London and New York. Her breakout came in Luca Guadagnino’s 2022 drama Bones and All, opposite Timothée Chalamet. She is represented by UTA and Lichter, Grossman.

The addition of DeLappe and the producers signals that the studio views the remake as a priority project.
