Sony Interactive Entertainment and Tencent have reached a confidential settlement, ending their copyright lawsuit over the game Light of Motiram. The title, accused of cloning elements from Sony's Horizon series, has been delisted from Steam and the Epic Games Store. The case is now dismissed with prejudice, closing it permanently.
Sony and Tencent announced a confidential settlement this week, resolving a contentious lawsuit over Light of Motiram, a Tencent-developed game likened to a clone of Sony's Horizon franchise. The agreement effectively ends the legal battle that began in July 2025, when Sony filed suit in a California federal court, alleging copyright and trademark infringement. Sony claimed the game's similarities to Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West could confuse players into believing it was part of the same series, describing it as a "slavish clone."
Tencent revealed Light of Motiram in November 2024, sparking immediate comparisons to Horizon due to shared themes of robotic creatures in a post-apocalyptic world. In response to the lawsuit, Tencent called Sony's originality claims "startling" and accused the company of attempting to monopolize elements of popular culture. Sony countered by labeling Tencent's defense "nonsense." Earlier in December 2025, Tencent agreed to halt all promotion and public testing of the game as preparations for trial advanced.
According to court documents filed this week, the parties jointly stipulated to dismiss the action. The filing states: "All pending motions are withdrawn and this action is hereby dismissed with prejudice. All parties shall bear their own fees and costs." Dismissal with prejudice means the case cannot be refiled. While the game's store pages on Steam and Epic have been removed, its website, Discord server, and social media presence remain active, hinting at potential revisions and a future relaunch.
The settlement amount remains undisclosed, leaving questions about the financial implications. This resolution avoids a full trial, allowing both companies to move forward without further legal entanglement.
