Sony maintains disc drive rationing after digital shift announcement

Sony continues to limit sales of attachable disc drives to one per order due to high demand. The move comes days after the company announced it will stop producing physical discs for PlayStation games starting in 2028.

On July 1 Sony said it would end production of physical discs for PlayStation games effective January 2028. From that date new releases will be sold only in digital form at retail and on the PlayStation Store.

The company updated the product page for the attachable disc drive with a notice that has appeared since at least November 2023. The notice states that discs for games released before January 2028 can still be played on the console.

Despite the planned transition Sony reports persistent demand for the hardware and has kept the one-per-order limit in place. Commenters on ResetEra have described the situation as ironic given the long-running sales restriction.

The announcement also indicates that the next PlayStation console will lack a built-in disc drive.
