Spring romance dramas draw crowds with fresh twists

Romance dramas from SBS, MBC and TVING are achieving strong ratings and subscriber success this spring. According to Nielsen Korea, MBC's "Perfect Crown" topped Friday programs. TVING's "Yumi’s Cells" ranked first in weekly paid subscriber contributions.

Broadcasters and streaming platforms have launched multiple romance dramas this spring, aligning with the season's vibe. SBS's romantic comedy "Sold Out on You," starring Ahn Hyo-seop and Chae Won-bin, shifts between a gray city and the lush Deokpung Village countryside, offering healing through green fields and rural scenery.

MBC's "Perfect Crown" led Friday-Saturday series and Friday programs in the Seoul metropolitan area, per Nielsen Korea. By its fourth episode, it exceeded double-digit ratings nationwide and in the capital, peaking at 13.8 percent, fueled by buzz around stars IU and Byeon Woo-seok.

TVING's "Yumi’s Cells" topped weekly paid subscriber contributions in its first week. Its third episode on tvN ranked first in its time slot among cable and general programming channels.

Unlike past seasons, this year's romances feature fresh twists: fantasy blended with healing for broad appeal on SBS and MBC, and relatable stories via anthropomorphic brain cells on TVING, targeting women in their 20s and 30s.
