Former NFL wide receiver Steve Smith Sr. shared guidance for Pittsburgh Steelers rookie Germie Bernard on navigating his first season. The advice focuses on observing team dynamics and avoiding common rookie pitfalls.
Smith emphasized the importance of identifying key voices in the locker room. “When you’re Germie Bernard, you’re sitting in a room. And you are sitting in there with a pen and paper, and you’re observing and trying to figure out who’s the real alpha dog in here,” he said.
He also warned against overcompensating due to anxiety. Young players sometimes overtalk or overexplain in an effort to fit in quickly, which can lead to missteps, Smith noted.
Bernard joins a wide receiver group led by DK Metcalf, with Michael Pittman Jr. added via trade. Roman Wilson competes for the third spot after limited playing time last year. The Steelers expect contributions immediately under quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
