Steven Levenson joins 'Labubu' movie as co-writer with Paul King

Screenwriter Steven Levenson has joined BAFTA-nominated director Paul King to co-write the screenplay for Pop Mart and Sony Pictures' 'Labubu' live-action/CGI hybrid movie. The update was revealed at the Paris stop of Pop Mart’s “The Monsters” global exhibition tour, following the project's initial announcement in late 2025.

Building on the December 2025 announcement that Paul King ('Wonka,' 'Paddington') would direct and produce the 'Labubu' adaptation, Pop Mart and Sony Pictures have expanded the creative team. Award-winning screenwriter Steven Levenson ('Dear Evan Hansen,' 'Tick, Tick … Boom!,' 'Fosse/Verdon') will co-write the screenplay with King.

Details were shared by Labubu creator Kasing Lung and Paul King during the Paris leg of Pop Mart’s “The Monsters” tour, celebrating the company's 10th anniversary. Lung, who introduced the whimsical Labubu world in his 'The Monsters Trilogy' picture books a decade ago, will executive produce alongside King, Michael Schaefer ('The Martian'), and Wenxin She ('A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,' 'Wish Dragon'). Brittany Morrissey oversees for Sony Pictures.

Sony acquired the screen rights to the Labubu IP in 2025. The project remains in early development.
