Suvendu Adhikari took oath as West Bengal chief minister on Saturday, marking the formation of the state's first BJP-led government after the party secured a majority in the assembly elections.
Hours after being elected leader of the BJP Legislature Party on Friday, Adhikari met Governor R N Ravi to stake claim to form the government. He will be sworn in at Kolkata's Brigade Parade Ground, most likely along with two deputy chief ministers. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief ministers of several NDA-ruled states are scheduled to attend the ceremony.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who presided over the legislature party meeting, highlighted the victory's significance for national security. He said the BJP would identify and remove every infiltrator, turning the border into an impenetrable fortress. Shah also noted the party's growth in the state from three seats in 2016 to 207 in 2026.
Adhikari outlined priorities including inquiries into corruption and crimes against women during the previous government's tenure. He said a commission headed by a retired judge would investigate all corruption cases. The incoming administration has begun preparations at the assembly, with nameplates of outgoing ministers removed and new signages installed.
