A man from Helsingborg has been sentenced to 16 years in prison and another Swede to nine years for drug smuggling and money laundering in Spain.

A Spanish special court on Wednesday sentenced a 55-year-old man from Helsingborg to 16 years in prison for drug offenses and money laundering. He is described as a key figure in a network that smuggled hashish from Morocco to northern Europe and laundered profits through real estate on the coast.

Joakim Broberg, known as the mayor's stepson in Marbella and linked to the alias Fat Tony, was sentenced to nine years in prison and fines of about 50 million kronor. The ruling states he assisted in money laundering but was acquitted of some charges of belonging to a criminal organization.

Broberg told media about the verdict: It is bullshit. I will appeal. He remains at large in Madrid and says he will not spend a single day in prison. The investigation was carried out in cooperation between Spanish police, Swedish authorities and Europol.
