A new teaser for Avengers: Doomsday features a somber Thor, contrasting sharply with the comedic style of his previous outing in Thor: Love and Thunder. Chris Hemsworth, who plays the God of Thunder, had previously criticized that 2022 film for becoming too silly. The clip signals a tonal shift in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Thor prepares for battle.
The marketing for Avengers: Doomsday has highlighted Thor in a more introspective light, addressing fan concerns over the character's recent portrayal. In the teaser, Thor delivers a poignant prayer before combat, reflecting on his life of duty and his desire for a peaceful future with a child. He intones, “Father, all my life I’ve answered every call, to honor, duty, to war. Now fate has given me something I never sought. A child, a life untouched by the storm... Grant me the strength of the old fathers, so that I may fight once more, defeat one more enemy, and return home to her. Not as a warrior, but as warmth, to teach her not battle, but stillness, the kind I never knew. Please father heed my word.”
This serious depiction stands in opposition to Thor: Love and Thunder, released in summer 2022, which grossed $760 million worldwide but divided audiences with its heavy emphasis on humor. Hemsworth himself reflected on this in a 2023 GQ profile, stating, “I think we just had too much fun. It just became too silly.” He shared that even his son's friends offered blunt feedback: “It’s a bunch of eight-year-olds critiquing my film. ‘We thought this one had too much humor, the action was cool but the VFX weren’t as good.’”
A year later, in Vanity Fair's May 2024 issue, Hemsworth elaborated on his frustrations with the role across four solo films and Avengers appearances: “I got caught up in the improv and the wackiness, and I became a parody of myself. I didn’t stick the landing.” He often felt sidelined, likening himself to “a security guard for the team,” and questioned his replaceability amid the spectacle of costumes and effects.
Despite these reservations, Hemsworth expressed enthusiasm for evolving the character. In a 2023 Entertainment Weekly interview, he emphasized the need for unpredictability: “I don’t want to continue to do it until people are so exhausted that they roll their eyes when they see me come on the screen as that character... I would love to try and [figure out] how we can do that again and keep it a little unpredictable.”
Avengers: Doomsday is slated for theatrical release on December 18, 2026, promising a refreshed take on Thor amid the MCU's ongoing narrative arc.
