On the evening in question, a faulty gas boiler was discovered in a Stuttgart multi-family house, causing highly elevated carbon monoxide concentrations. One resident had become unconscious, prompting residents to call emergency number 112.
Upon arrival, the rescue service's carbon monoxide detectors triggered, alerting the fire department. Air measurements revealed high gas levels in several apartments. Carbon monoxide is colorless and odorless and can lead to death quickly when inhaled.
Firefighters shut down the defective boiler and ventilated the building. Five people were examined, with three requiring hospital transport. The fire department advises installing CO detectors especially for gas boilers, oil heaters, or fireplaces.
