Tony Gachoka declares bid for Nairobi governor

Veteran journalist Tony Gachoka has declared his candidacy for Nairobi governor on July 12, 2026. He pledged to tackle corruption and promote accountable leadership in the capital.

Tony Gachoka, the KANU spokesperson and veteran journalist with over 25 years in media, announced his bid during a Sunday evening interview. He stated that Nairobi needs accountable leadership rather than politics, following years of observing governance issues in the city.

Gachoka said he consulted several leaders, including KANU chairman Gideon Moi, Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. He noted that he has majority support from coalition partners, adding that coalition politics will shape the 2027 Nairobi gubernatorial race.

Other candidates who have declared interest include Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri, Moses Kuria and Agnes Kagure. Incumbent Governor Johnson Sakaja is expected to seek a second term.
