President Donald Trump criticized D.C. Council member Janeese Lewis George in a Sunday social media post after she won the District’s Democratic primary for mayor. The Daily Wire reported that Lewis George won 54.1% of the vote, nearly 20 points ahead of former council member Kenyan R. McDuffie, positioning her as the favorite in November in heavily Democratic Washington.

According to The Daily Wire, Trump claimed Lewis George supports policies including “empty[ing] the prisons,” making Washington a “Sanctuary City,” opposing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, “Defund[ing] the Police,” and “continue and expand Cashless Bail.”
In the same post, Trump said he has worked to make Washington “the Envy of the World,” citing “almost No Crime” and what he called a major “Beautification” effort. He added that he would meet with Lewis George but warned he would not allow the city to be “destroyed” by her agenda.
Lewis George, a Ward 4 council member, won the Democratic primary for mayor this month. The Associated Press reported that her main challenger, former council member Kenyan McDuffie, conceded the race on June 18. With Democrats dominating citywide elections, multiple outlets have noted that the Democratic nominee typically has a strong advantage in the general election.
The Daily Wire said Lewis George’s campaign platform included universal childcare and taxpayer-funded housing.
Trump’s post also referenced Democratic primary outcomes in New York. The Daily Wire reported that three candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani won their primaries, with two defeating incumbent Democrats—results also described by major news organizations covering the New York contests.
In that context, The Daily Wire reported that some prominent Democrats—including Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro—have voiced concerns about the party’s leftward shift in some primaries.
